French Words : Listen to French words and repeat French words

Always listen very well to the French words you hear : lots of French words you can re-use in your answer, sometimes you can even completely repeat the French words that you just heard. Parotting pays of in French!

The easiest way to answer a French greeting is to repeat the French words the French person used on you. Of course, add the appropriate French words for Mister (Monsieur), Misses (Madame) or Miss (Mademoiselle)

Translating the above French words of the conversation :

  • Bonsoir Monsieur
    Bonsoir Madame
  • Au revoir
    Au revoir

Good evening Sir
Good evening misses
Good bye
Good bye

SALUT :

Salut is a very informal French word, use this only with close friends or with your family members.

  • salut is a French word used to say "hello" or "hi" between friends
  • salut is also a French word used to say "bye" : it is a very usefull French word!

French words and habits for French Greetings :

It is very common in France to say "bonjour" to everybody, when you enter a shop, restaurant or bar or a French classroom etc.

  • Men normally shake hands as a greeting and farewell.
  • When you greet someone of the opposite sex who you know well, you often kiss him or on each cheek. There is no fixed rule for this.
  • Within the family cheek kissing is normal between all sexes.

In the north of France you kiss each cheeck twice, whilst in other regions it is once. Generally the lips do not make contact with the skin. A lot of time to make sure no make up is "wasted", kisses are done in the air next to the cheecks (or maybe the French are trying to say something about your French perfume..., cannot be as French perfume is Z best!)
