Take the yellow pages, look for a French, Moroccan, Algerian, Haitian… restaurant: any restaurant where you can expect French speaking people and a French menu.
What can you learn by going to a French restaurant?
- First of all you will get a typical French menu with courses written in both French and English
- Secondly you will learn the words for starter, main dish, drinks and desserts as you would find them on a menu card in and French restaurant in France.
- Thirdly, there should be a French speaking person in the restaurant you can have a chat with. Hopefully this will be the waiter or waitress so you can try to order everything in French.
- Also you can learn about French food you most likely never have heard about before and you can ask the waiter in English what’s the meal all about. Doing this in France could become a nightmare as lots of waiters will not be able to speak English.
French restaurants normally attract other French speaking people, so if you happen to find a cozy French restaurant and you become a regular, chances are big you will end up with some French friends with whom you can practice your French language with.
Just be warned that lot of French dishes contain lots of butter and cream, do enquire well before you start eating. Bon appétit!
