A fun way if you love cartoons is buying a French cartoon (if you study French that is) and try to understand it.
One very popular cartoon is Asterix and Obelix: talking about the French during the days of the roman invasion about 2000 years ago. With a lot of hints to modern days France. You need to ask for a special edition if you want some kind of vocabulary-list to help you reading the comic. personally I didn’t like these translations much: they are way to far from the original (to make your reading a pleasure, but your learning goes down the drain…).
Another way of Studying French is watching French movies. There is a movie called: Asterix and Obelix meet Cleopatra. But I must warn you, without subtitles I could hardly hear any of the French phrases spoken…
French movies are quite different than American movies, so in order to understand the French culture, they are very educational. In order to understand the French words I challenge you to try to understand the words that you can read when you have a DVD with French subtitles. In order words: don’t be discouraged when you cannot follow the French words: French people speak very fast!
There is also Asterix Learn French software on the market, but I never got my hands on that. I prefer the real French text books with good audio CD’s and any other extra software that is added is a bonus!
