We continue or list of free French flash cards with a word that’s also used in many French swear words expressions: "dirty".
This time we tackle the French translation for the English word: "dirty".
The clue in the above French flash card is obvious when you know that "sale" is the French translation of "dirty". It doesn’t get easier than that.
Now I can hear you say: this is cheating as the answer is already on the flash card! Although it looks like cheating, the main purpose of flash cards is "burn" the French words in your memory.
The idea is that when you hear the word dirty, the first images that comes into your brain is the French flash card above. Then your mind just needs to read ’sale’ and you have the translation of your English word.
Again, it’s not abut cheating, it’s about helping you to memorize French words in a way that’s fun and effective!
Purely visual French flash cards
The above French flash cards are a bit more difficult to memorize as they don’t provide a real clue.
On the other hand they are easier to memorize than a normal English to French vocabulary list because they help you to translate the image on the front of the flash card straight into French (’sale’ will be written at the back of the flash card).
These image French flash cards are extra useful for my students that aren’t native English speakers. With the above French flash cards, it doesn’t mater what your native language is, you only need to look at the image and memorize the French word associated to it.
Of course when making French image flash cards as above, you need to know the cultural background of your students. Malaysians will know that this is a dirty coffee shop table and viewers of US cable shows will know that the guy in the picture is the host of Dirty Jobs.
A Spanish child living in Europe only watching Spanish soaps, will need another French flash card that makes sense for him.
