Are you looking for a French language course? Then first ask yourself why you want to study French:

you are visiting France and need to be able to speak French: speak some basic words in the French language
you want to make a deep French conversation with French people
you want to read French books
you want to write French letters, emails

I have listed the above French courses from easy to difficult but what is more important: you need to be sure your French teacher and your French course matches your needs.

Nothing is more hateful than having a French teacher from France who spends 99% of his French lessons in teaching you how to rrrrrollll the French rrrr.

So before you enrol in any language school: ask what you can expect. Especially if they stress on French writing, you are warned in advance that your progress will be much more slow than a French course based on conversation only.

And if you can: get yourself a bilingual native speaker from countries like Canada, Switzerland or Belgium. These people have struggled with more than 1 language and have a feel for where you will encounter difficulties when studying French.

I was walking through the streets of Kuala Lumpur last evening and a woman stops me asking: do you speak French? Wooaaah, I got a stalker! Ok, I do give French classes in a school nearby, so that probably gave me away

Anyway, she had a French letter from her boyfriend in Algeria and she wanted me to translate it. Quite embarrassing if you read somebody else’s French love phrases… and quite strange that the person the letter is addressed to doesn’t speak French.

But who am I to judge? I just was asked to translate, and even for free, so I helped the woman out, which made her quite happy

I didn’t tell her that all the French are ladies-men…. so in order to be prepared: get used to the French love phrases you will surely hear once you visit France and get close to a guy

Yes, we are talking about the so called DOM-TOM: French territory overseas. That means if you are in Tahiti, suddenly you need to pay in Euros! Go figure…

But if you really want to enjoy tropical paradise and study at the same time, try the Université des Antilles et de la Guyane: the only French university in the Caribbean! Actually the university is kind of split up in 3 parts:

Guadeloupe and 150 km further:
Martinique and 1500 km further:
French Guiana.

Learn languages with movies and cartoons

A fun way if you love cartoons is buying a French cartoon (if you study French that is) and try to understand it.

One very popular cartoon is Asterix and Obelix: talking about the French during the days of the roman invasion about 2000 years ago. With a lot of hints to modern days France. You need to ask for a special edition if you want some kind of vocabulary-list to help you reading the comic. personally I didn’t like these translations much: they are way to far from the original (to make your reading a pleasure, but your learning goes down the drain…).

Another way of Studying French is watching French movies. There is a movie called: Asterix and Obelix meet Cleopatra. But I must warn you, without subtitles I could hardly hear any of the French phrases spoken…

French movies are quite different than American movies, so in order to understand the French culture, they are very educational. In order to understand the French words I challenge you to try to understand the words that you can read when you have a DVD with French subtitles. In order words: don’t be discouraged when you cannot follow the French words: French people speak very fast!

There is also Asterix Learn French software on the market, but I never got my hands on that. I prefer the real French text books with good audio CD’s and any other extra software that is added is a bonus!

My favorite of the most famous French phrases is: je pense donc je suis, which translates in English to : I think, therefore I am. (said by Descartes)

Why is this my favorite famous French phrase?

This is my favorite famous French phrase not because of it’s intrinsic wisdom, but for what it can tell you about the French as a people.

This French phrase assumes that whoever is not thinking, is not meant to be there.

This is very important if you want to deal with the French, especially in politics or business. If you make a statement without first thinking it over, the French assume you never made a statement in the first place.

Or in other words: if you want to agree about something with the French, you do need to argue and make sure you can clarify your statement with prove.

Other than that, the French seem to love to discuss just for the fun of passing time. That’s why you really need a good knowledge of French before the French will ever accept you is one of them, because without French: how can you discuss with them in the first place? Unfortunately, French for them is the language associated with knowledge: the better you speak French, the smarter you must be.

Next time you hear the French asking you "why", you know that’s just a normal consequence of their famous French phrase: je pense donc je suis.
