French swear words

If there is one thing that drives me kind of nuts, then it is learning French verbs. I mean, what is the logic of changing your verb each time not only for:

1. present,
2. past and
3. future (that’s 3 times),

but also 6 differences for:

1. I
2. you
3. he
4. we
5. you
6. they

3 times 6: that’s 18 different verb forms already.

That’s manageable you would say, but then for future you have you will versus you would…. yes, the list is endless!

So how to I manage learning French verbs? By speaking as much French as possible and asking people to correct me each time I make a mistake. In the beginning that meant I got interrupted after each syllable But now it’s getting much better.

An other quite boring way is to list the verbs and try to study them by heart. Quite useless I find because: what is the idea of knowing all by heart if you don’t have a clue when to use the verbs?

Practice makes the master as usual, similar when it comes to learning French verbs.

The most important of all reasons to learn French is to understand the French culture through the French language. Let me give an example:

• a group of 999 women + 1 male is considered male or female?
  According to French grammar: it’s MALE.
  Which shows you this is quite a male society (but then, which society isn’t these days…)
• Lots of words about the weather but only 1 word for grandfather.
  Which tells you that weather must be very important in French culture. Unlike in Asian cultures: it makes no difference whether grandfather is from father’s side or mother’s side. So that explains why grandparents get into homes and aren’t taken care of by their family.

For me learning French is not bout which word is which, it’s about what is important for these French people and what is not. And the language will just tell me: you can hide a lot, but you can never hide your language!
