DVD French language instruction

If you love to watch TV, then you will love any DVD French language instruction for learning French in your sofa :-)

But to make full use of any French language DVD you have to look at children and how they learn a language:

  • listen,
  • play and
  • learn on autopilot!

Learn
French now! When you buy these 20 French language CD’s, you can be listening to French already while reading the rest of this post!

Use your natural language learning skills

Since you can read this, you have proven you have the skills to learn a language! That means you can use these skills again to learn French easily as well!

How did you learn your mother language?

You learned your language as a child, without noticing it :-)

Children hear the same sounds over and over again.

And they hear these sounds when playing, eating, traveling in the car, trying to sleep…

When you study the French language, you should do the same:

listen to French language CD’s over and over again.

That’s the way to learn French easily and learn French fast, just like you learned your first language when you were a child.

Talking about children:

  • if you child has some challenges but you would love her or him to speak French, do know that there are French language programs for children with disabilities.
  • for any children out there: French language worksheets for children are available as well, leave a comment if you want more information.

French language self study course

If you want to speak French fast, you need to put yourself on a passive French language self study course.

What do we mean?

You are no more a child and adults cannot afford so much time to playing… But you know you can multitask whatever you do with listening to the radio (some even watch TV when ironing!)

You need to listen to any French audio CD’s available, anytime, anywhere!

Even if that means you should listen to a French explanation about history of Cajun French language :-)

I can imagine you would prefer to listen to some French music! Listen to famous French speaking artists :

  • Canadian Celine Dion, (although we realise Canada’s English French language problems: what counts is you undergo a French immersion)
  • Indonesian Anggun (our "French language Asia ambassador" :-) and
  • the ‘pure’ French from France: Alizée and Vanessa Paradis.

To learn French fast: listen to French language CD’s anytime, anywhere:

  • driving your car,
  • traveling on public transport,
  • ironing clothes,
  • doing the dishes,
  • preparing dinner,
  • taking a shower,
  • when you go to sleep and
  • at breakfast!

Only listen to the French language - avoid rushing into the following:

  • No need to translate French language into English: just listen to the French language words and phrases just like children hear the French words and phrases whilst growing up.
  • No need for English to French language conversion yet either: just get yourself a French language immersion before you start using it!
  • Surely no need yet to focus on French beginners reading as a second language: children know how to speak much longer before they learn how to read!
  • Forget about how to speak the correct French language + how to write a letter in French: Rome wasn’t built in 1 day! Start from the bottom up and you will be surprised how fast you can learn how to speak French!

French Language Schools and French Language Courses

Any good French language school or French language course will make sure you learn French easily providing you with French learning software.

But before there was learn French software, French language training programs already know the importance of audio tapes for learning a foreign language:

  • my grand-dad had a language tape used to teach French in the 1940s at Yale and
  • my mom has the famous Linguaphone "suitcase" filled with French cassettes.

So when it comes to French language education, it is clear that the French language is better internalized when you can listen to French language lessons.

We add to that :

Pick up lines French language

What are the first words you remember the fastest when learning a foreign language?

Swear words…

You can learn a few French swear words here which they won’t teach you in French language schools. At least not in the French language courses Bordeaux offered to me :-) I don’ t expect French language training Ottowa Ontario having a different approach either…

It’s not that advisable if you want to master the business French language, unless you need to scold people for not paying their bills… :-)

Do you manage mastering French swearing faster than French speaking?

Then you should concentrate first on listening to pick up lines in the French language: they will make you much more popular than repeating French Swear Words :-)

Is French a good second language for Americans?

Of course it is!

Why?

Because once you know how to speak French and understand the French culture, you will understand:

  • how the French really felt when Bush converted "French fries" to "Freedom fries".
  • why the French show great respect for the way Bush played the words French and Freedom: both in alliteration as in Eiffel Tower and Statue of Liberty…

If you want to know more benefits of learning French language, you should watch the Bachelorette show to watch how a French accent is successful in seducing women…

Where to get DVD French language instruction materials?

You could go shopping for the famous Pimsleur French course, but you can buy equally good French Audio materials in the Rocket French 20 French language CD’s package.

This is what my students use and
they speak French fluently after 3 months
.

Maybe that’s because they have me as their French language teacher…?

Mainly it’s because they are motivated and I gave them a shortcut in finding the right French tools:

Note to myself: I should write a page only about reviews of other French courses to choose from, for now I know from experience the above 2 French course tools let you speak French fluently within 3 months.

When it comes to interactive French DVD’s with learning French language online listening tasks: a great site for English native speakers wanting to study French is http://www.bbcactive.com/languages/talk-section/ .

You can buy French language instruction DVD’s there or do the listening exercises online.

But since you won’t be online 24/7, I recommend you do buy your own French listening material for your French language immersion.

Summary: French language immersion

If possible buy French music CD’s, as that’s what you most likely feel at ease with listening to at the background.

If you still need to buy a French language course, choose a French language package that comes with good French language CD’s.

These CDs are integrated in a complete learn French experience with French language learning software.

French music is only giving you the much needed French language immersion.

If sitting in front of the TV is your strongest quality, do get yourself a DVD French language instruction and start watching it every day.

The French word for

  • memory triggers like this connecting "a poster of a fish" with:

    • similar sounds: The French word l’affiche sounds like a fish

Learn French in the car would be the name of the CD to buy if you have a car and want to learn French. Penton Overseas is said to have a good set of 9CD’s.

yet again I can imagine you don’t want to spend too much money to start with, because you need to know if studying French in the car really works for you.

For me it works perfectly as I only have to switch on a French channel and I can practice my French listening skills on the go.

this of course isn’t that inviting for beginners so for people that are starting out I have 3 suggestions:

1. Buy the cheapest Learn French in the car CD you can find.

Go to your better bookstore and buy a CD that says: Learn French in the car.

These kind of courses are especially made to be used without a textbook, which means that you can listen to what is said and are given time to repeat. I can hear you thinking: "but then I am buying a CD that’s half empty and on top of that they will be speaking my language and the French language.

Both true :-) the CD’s I have listened to so far have an English instructor introducing you on the CD how to listen and learn French in your car:

  • they read a French phrase and ask you to repeat
  • they read an English phrase, ask you to translate, give you a pause to do so, then only give their French translation and again give you a pause so you can repeat their French phrase.

It’s a real effective parrot kind of way to effectively learn French in the car..

2. Learn French in the car with music

Go to your music shop and ask for French music CD’s. Go and listen to the CD’s before you buy them for 3 reasons:

  1. do you like what you hear? (what you don’t like will never teach you French!)
  2. does the French music come with the lyrics (otherwise it will be a pain to really understand what they are saying in French, unless you have a high level of the French language already
  3. can you sing along with the French song having the lyrics in hand? If not, you need to find a singer that sings slower (rappers most likely talk way too fast in French…)

3. Learn French in the car for free

Download French Music from our website (comes with the lyrics) , download our free French lessons or if you are patient: download all the audio we already put on our learn French website.

Even better: download all the French you can find from the Internet on your iPod or MP3 player and you are ready to go and learn French in the car for free.

voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soirYou most likely know the song Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir? And most likely you didn’t know it was written like this…

Main thing is that this French phrase could be stuck in your brain and that’s where you need to capitalize on!

Lot’s of people don’t remember any of the French words they learned in school due to a lack of practice. If that’s the case with you as well, then you could opt to listen to French music.

We downloaded a few French songs there, included one of Celine Dion (oh yes, she is a French speaking Canadian and to be frank before she got famous with her English songs, she was oh so proud to be able to sing in French in stead of English… that’s long before she became a Las Vegas girl, we would advice her now to try the Moulin Rouge …)

Talking of Moulin Rouge: "coucher" translates in English to sleep, so if you didn’t get the hint just listing to the music: this French song Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir is quite… well… for adults :-)

But it carries a lot of useful every day French words in it, so it will pay off if you listen to the song over and over until you remember the title by heart:

  • Soir means evening and is commonly used in the greeting Bonsoir. You don’t need translation software to know that it means: good evening.
  • Voulez-vous… translates to "Do you want…" and will be heard a lot in the sentence asking: what do you want: "Qu’est-ce que vous voulez? Click the link if you want to practice how to pronounce French words

Whatever you do: if you don’t want to end up in any stranger’s bed, don’t go to France singing Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir in the streets :-)

If there is one French song that I know by hearth, then it is Aicha : a French song from Algerian-French music writer Cheb Khaled. This French song has been very popular, it has been a French hit in Malaysia as well, and my teacher those days was smart enough to incorporate it in his teachings. From him I learned that you need to incorporate anything your students love in order to let them learn the most :-)

The other reason why I love this French song is because it is inspired by the hardships felt by the young French-Algerian population in French Algeria. Although I don’t get my nose beaten up because I am not wearing a veal, the mental oppression not being allowed to say what you really feel is not good for anybody’s state of mind.

If you wonder why with one leg I am in Malaysia and with the other I want to get out of Malaysia so badly, it is because I would like to have peace of mind, not only peace in the Malaysian Newspaper

When you care about your children, you not only want to give them the best education ever, but you also want them to still have earthly resources available.

But how can you as an individual take care of a sustainable earth? You could start by visiting The Tree of Tomorrow Site. This new site wants to inspire you based on both ancient and emerging wisdom to make the earth one sustainable community.

This site is made under "Creative Commons" , much like Wikipedia and they are looking for people with good ideas or old wisdom to contribute to the site. Book knowledge is one thing, the other wisdom is the collective experience we all humans have on the entire planet.

Trying to tap into that wisdom and make it benefit the entire planet is the aim of this new The Tree of Tomorrow Site.

When you feel that you are only such a little creature in this huge earth, then get inspired by the seeds of a tree. They start of sometimes even smaller than the eye can see, yet they grow taller than you and they produce enormous new seeds.

Inspired by this idea, The Tree of Tomorrow Website wants to sow one sustainable seed in you: hoping that you will be able to multiply this seed in many more people and areas.

You could start by reading their articles about the eco-village. Eco-villages are rural or even urban communities where people strive to integrate:

  • a supportive social environment with

  • a low impact way of life.

For instance: in stead of going to the supermarket and buying eggs that come from chickens fed with God knows what chemicals, have your own chicken. It will eat corn which is much cheaper than chemical produced food, it will lay healthy eggs and it will fertilize your land for free.

For more simple, healthy and sustainable ideas, do visit The Tree of Tomorrow Site and contribute!
